In 2023, the U.S. EPA announced several rounds of waste and recycling funding touted as the largest such investments in 30 years. Millions of dollars will go to a variety of recycling infrastructure, environmental justice, organics and climate projects.
The funding — which comes from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act — is considered to be a boost for local governments, tribes, nonprofits and community groups. Projects aim to improve aging recycling systems, add public education programs, bolster landfill diversion projects, and support neighborhoods disproportionately affected by pollution and climate change. Separate funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is also expected to help kickstart food waste reduction programs.
Here’s a rundown of major funding announcements and project details from 2023.
