- The EPA initially implemented a treatment plan in January and announced additional steps on July 21 that include the installation of a new system at the site. The site was added to the Superfund list in 2011.
- The EPA will oversee the transfer of the new tanks to ensure discharge limits are followed during the swap of the old storage units for the new tanks. The new units are expected to be in place by November of this year.
Dive Insight:
The plant is operated by two companies held responsible for the cleanup at the site: GE and the SI Group Inc., a corporation involved in the development and manufacturing of chemicals and resins. Superfund was launched as a way to hold polluters responsible for cleaning up hazardous waste sites, including financial contributions to support the cost associated with cleanup efforts.
