Dive Brief:

• An unused dry dock from the Port of San Francisco is in the process of being transported to a ship recycling facility in China.
• The dry dock was formerly used by the U.S. Navy until operations ceased in 1999.
• The U.S. Coast Guard is facilitating the delivery of the dry dock by using one of its heavy-lift vessels to aid in its transport. 

Dive Insight:

The recycling project, subsidized by the U.S. Department of Defense, will wind up costing $1.5 to $6.8 million less than original estimates. The vessel was expected to leave the port by the end of October as it makes its way to a recycling plant near Shanghai, its final destination.
