Dive Brief:
- Casella Waste Management of Pennsylvania, Inc. has settled with the Department of Environmental Protection for $20,750 from breaking the Solid Waste Management Act, for violations found last year at the McKean County Landfill.
- Casella agreed to perform a community environmental project in which Casella will provide 315 tons of landfill disposal capacity in lieu of paying a $15,750 part of the settlement payment due to DEP. The space will be used to dispose of solid waste created through demolition of buildings throughout McKean County. The hauler already has taken care of the remaining $5,000.
- Casella failed to adequately manage the McKean County Landfill, resulting in the release of leachate. The firm also was found in violation of laws for having a large amount of exposed waste on the landfill; for inadequate intermediate cover placed over the trash; and for storing leaking containers of residual waste, reports the Sharon Herald.
Dive Insight:
The settlement came after DEP officials inspected McKean County Landfill several times and found violations, including having too steep a waste slope. This agreement between the hauler and municipality satisfies the fine of $15,750 for Casella and takes care of 315 tons of landfill disposal for McKean County.
