With more than 10,000 landfills no longer accepting waste, that frees up a massive amount of land that could be repurposed. Some areas around the US have started repurposing the shuttered sites. An Ohio landfill was transformed into a wildlife habitat after the site was shuttered in 1993; Waste Management currently monitors and maintains the natural area. Plans are under consideration for the Pitkin County landfill to be converted into a garden space. The site, located in Aspen, CO, has the potential to grow plants and vegetables.
