Dive Brief:
- Covanta has announced partnerships with nine municipalities in Massachusetts to provide bundled sustainable waste management.
- Covanta, headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, will render sustainable waste disposal at its Springfield WTE plant, located in Agawam, Massachusetts. A majority of the municipalities have been bringing solid waste to this facility since 1988.
- The nine towns are expected to generate 25,000 tons of waste annually. The facility currently generates enough electricity to power 5,000 households.
Dive Insight:
The agreement will begin in July of 2014. Covanta will also extend services such as e-waste and organics recycling, medication disposal and bulk waste removal for the municipalities. According to Penn Energy, Covanta Sustainable Solutions vice-president Stephen Dian said "By bonding together and partnering with us, [towns] will be provided a suite of services that includes zero-waste-to-landfill, all in one agreement."
