Dive Brief:
- Organic waste collection has been unanimously approved by the Costa Mesa Sanitary District.
- An anaerobic digestion facility currently under construction, will accept the waste from Costa Mesa residents. The new plant is in Perris, California and may be opened as early as November of 2014. The facility will convert the waste into renewable natural gas.
- A six-year agreement was given to CR&R Waste and Recycling Services. The organics program is estimated to cost $504,000 per year.
Dive Insight:
The district did not open bidding to other companies since no other businesses offer a similar service at this time. The district was guaranteed the lowest anaerobic digestion fee within Orange County. If CR&R does negotiate a lower fee at some point, the city of Costa Mesa would then receive a lower rate as well.
