Dive Brief:
- A contract dispute is causing recycled bales of paper and cardboard to pile up on Bay Area ports.
- The spat between the workers and the shipping lines has lasted at least seven months, with no resolution in sight.
- Recology’s Recycle Center in San Francisco, CA is loaded with thousands of bales of materials, and three more facilities are in the process of being filled. An estimated 15 truckloads of material per day are sitting at the recycling center.
Dive Insight:
Robert Reed, a spokesperson for Recology, said that the company is looking for additional space at this time. "We don’t have enough seagoing shipping containers to handle all the material," said Reed.
At this time, all metal, glass, and plastic at the center are being transported to domestic reprocessing plants.
