Dive Brief:
- The charming tourist town of Charleston, SC is trying to pull together funding to try out an advanced trash receptacle: the Big Belly Solar cans.
- Big Belly Solar cans contain an advanced tech system that provides haulers with alerts to let them know when the bins are full. In theory, the bins wouldn't experience unsightly overflow and would also reduce unnecessary trips to empty them if they haven't reached capacity.
- According to the Post and Courier, the city will place 23 pairs of cans if it can secure $96,000 in private donations from the Southeast Recycling Development Council. Taxpayers would contribute around $25,000 to be used for education of the public and outreach programs.
Dive Insight:
Many cities and universities across the US have began testing the popular smart bins. New York City began using the bins under the Bloomberg administration, while Virginia Tech and the University of Houston have also adopted the electronic bins on campus.
