Name: Tim Stuart
New title: CEO of AMP
Previous title: Chief operating officer for Republic Services
Tim Stuart, the former COO of Republic Services, will become AMP’s new CEO. Founder Matanya Horowitz will transition to the company’s chief technology officer role.
Colorado-based AMP, which has offered artificial intelligence-powered robotics for the waste and recycling industry for ten years, rebranded in February from AMP Robotics to better reflect the company’s growing focus on building recycling centers using the AI sorting systems it designs.
In March, AMP’s board of directors brought on Stuart as the company’s first “independent director,” a move Horowitz said would help accelerate AMP’s business model in part because of Stuart’s understanding of the role technology plays in the waste industry’s future.
In Stuart’s previous job as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Republic Services, he focused on adopting and scaling new technologies, AMP said in a news release. That work was in addition to his role overseeing field operations, integrations and company digital operations strategy.
“Tim’s industry knowledge and experience will amplify our ability to compete as a major player in the industry, and I’m grateful to have him on board to help realize the full potential of what we’ve started,” Horowitz said in a statement.
Stuart spent nearly 18 years at Republic, where he served in numerous positions across the country including area president, region vice president, and vice president roles. In 2019 he was promoted to executive vice president and COO from his previous role as executive vice president of operations, according to a news release. Stuart left the COO role in September 2023.
Prior to his work at Republic, Stuart worked at WM for more than a decade.
Stuart credited Horowitz’s work as a “brilliant technologist” and said AMP is well-positioned to offer its technology in more settings with Horowitz in the CTO role.
"The potential of meaningfully lower-cost, higher-performance recycling systems is exciting, and the ability to process municipal solid waste to further reduce environmental impact is significant,” Stuart said in a statement.
AMP this year has partnered with several companies to build bespoke, automated recycling facilities, such as its partnership with Recycling and Disposal Solutions in Portsmouth, Virginia.
