Dive Brief:

• The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality announced the regional recycling rate in central Virginia topped its target rate of 55% in 2013.
• 58.4% of waste in the area was diverted from a landfill. The state law requires the region to recycle a minimum of 25% of its waste.
• In 2012, 485,097 tons of waste was recycled in the region while 505,831 tons were recycled in 2013.

Central VA maintains its stronghold as one of the top recycling regions in the state. For many years, this area has consistently exceeded expectations. The weight of paper materials, yard waste and wood, metals, glass and plastic are combined and used to determine the final recycling rate.
