Dive Brief:
- Casella Waste Systems expects to file plans to expand the Juniper Ridge landfill in Old Town, Maine.
- The Rutland, VT-based waste management company is preparing to file paperwork so it can begin the expansion in 2015. The landfill is currently expected to reach capacity in 2019, according to estimates from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
- Taking current volumes into consideration, which are approximately 675,000 tons per year, the DEP gauges the expansion should increase its lifespan by 8 to 10 years.
Dive Insight:
After the application is filed (most likely in July 2015), the DEP will review the information before approaching the city and federal government for approval.
But the company better hope that it doesn’t have to play the waiting game for permits like it did when it requested an expansion of its landfill in Elmira, NY.
