Dive Brief:

• Call2Recycle, Inc. announced that the total weight of batteries and cell phones it collected increased in 2014. This marks the 18th year in a row the volume has increased.
• The consumer battery stewardship organization reports that almost 12 million pounds of materials were collected in locations across the U.S. and Canada.
• As a greater number of states introduce legislation regarding battery recycling, Call2Recycle is in a position to connect with those states and lead efforts to educate consumers as they transition  to battery recycling.

The non-profit suggests that, as evidenced by nearly 20 years of growth, consumers are understanding the value in recycling batteries and are also becoming active participants in this facet of the sustanability movement. 

In the upcoming year, Call2Recycle plans to increase collections further by showing consumers that battery recycling is convenient. Since there are 34,000 drop off locations in the non-profit’s network, 90% of residents in North America live within 10 miles of a drop-off location, making it easier to recycle, and thereby leading to more growth in the collection rate.
