Dive Brief:
- DVO, a two-stage anaerobic digestion specialist, is almost finished with the construction of a 1.4 million gallon anaerobic digester for agricultural waste.
- The facility at Calgren Renewable Fuels is expected to open in September of 2014. It is located in Pixley, CA.
- The digester can hold up to 1.4 million gallons of manure and organic waste. It will get 55,000 gallons of solid and liquid waste materials from a local farm that has 2,000 cattle.
Dive Insight:
Biogas from anaerobic digestion conducted at the plant will replace thousands of gallons of ethanol annually. The biosolids from the plant will be returned back to the dairy farm in the form of cattle bedding, Waste Management World reports. Liquid nutrients recovered at the plant will also be used as a fertilizer at the farm.
The digesters are expected to reduce the environmental impact of the site's agricultural greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90%, according to Steve Dvorak, founder and owner of DVO.
