Dive Brief:
- Artist Mina Karini and her friend Timothy Logan were arrested and jailed in Washington following the alleged theft of recycling bins from a residential neighborhood.
- A Secret Service agent saw the alleged thieves in the process of lifting 51 recycling bins that they claimed they were collecting for an art project. According to the police report, the bins were placed in a car for transport. The two alleged criminals dispute this number.
- Karini told The Washington Post that she took the bins because they featured stickers which read, "Take Me!" affixed to the lids. She claims that she thought that meant they were free to anyone who wanted them, and intended to convert them into flower planters.
Dive Insight:
The district is currently in the midst of replacing the old bins with new ones, hence the stickers. There have been reports from residents that new bins were turning up missing. but the duo arrested claim they are not responsible for the disappearance of those particular bins. The two alleged thieves are scheduled to be in court facing charges of theft on May 15, 2014.
