The month long management lockout of Allied Waste workers in Evansville, Indiana will apparently continue for another few weeks. Despite published reports that the two sides would meet yesterday, they remain at odds. The next scheduled meeting between the two sides is now in two weeks.
The lockout impacts 79 workers in Evansville.
At issue is a plan to replace the current pension plan with a 401(k) plan. As part of the plan, Allied Waste pledged to make a contribution of $1.4 million into the 401(k) plan.
“But that definitely is not the only issue,” said Local 215 President Chuck Whobrey told the Courier Press. “It’s one of the larger ones, but it isn’t the only one.”
Meanwhile, the Teamsters are not looking to make things easy for Allied Waste and its parent company, Republic Services. On Monday, they again extended their picket line in California.
More than 200 workers who work at or deliver to a Republic Services owned hauling facility chose to support the locked out Evansville, Indiana workers by voluntarily honoring the picket line. This included the drivers, mechanics and sorters who are members of Teamsters Local 350, members of Teamsters Local 70 who drive for Republic/Allied out of Alameda County, members of Teamsters Local 350 who work for other area companies and deliver to Republic's Milpitas facility, and members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and Ironworkers Unions who are constructing a new recycling facility at the site.
