Dive Brief:
- A new, $35 million Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) has opened in Montgomery, Alabama. The plant will process waste using co-mingled waste collected during pick-up.
- The MRF is operated by Infinitus Energy, a company based in Plantation, Florida, which converts waste into energy and materials.
- The facility is expected to handle 30 tons of recyclables per hour, while separating organics for composting. The plant anticipates diverting around 80% of the waste from entering the municipal landfill.
Dive Insight:
Bulk Handling Systems, the company that supplied and installed the equipment at the plant, said that the single-bin approach is working due in part to technological advances. According to Waste Management World, Infinitus CEO Kyle Mowitz said that future phases of the project will include further maximization of the organic waste stream with the use of anaerobic digestion to create biogas and digestate.
