Nebraska named recipiants for $1.9 million in tire recycling grants Thursday.
The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) listed the names of applicants from 101 projects in the state who will receive funds. Individual grants range from hundreds of dollars to more than $100,000.
"These grants put that money into use locally to help manage scrap tires," NDEQ Director Mike Linder said in a statement. "We like to see the highest possible beneficial use of these old tires, and these projects help us reach that goal."
The grants are intended to incentivize and reimburse organizations, schools and cities who purchase recycled tire materials.
Some recipient examples from the NDEQ's press release include:
City of Columbus - $118,460.25 grant to reimburse 25% of the cost of an artificial turf football field and athletic running track surface using crumb rubber made from recycled scrap tires. 304,000 pounds of crumb rubber were used on the turf and 70,000 pounds in the running track.
