Dive Brief:

• The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has ordered Peninsula Compost Co LLC to close its recycling and composting facility.
• The company, located in Wilmington, DE, was forced to close immediately due to its failure to control odors.
• The facility was ordered to stop accepting all materials immediately.

The agency notes numerous problems with the facility, including faulty equipment, unacceptably long waits to produce compost, excessive amounts of stored waste and finished compost, and neglecting to develop markets to meet production demand. 

David Small, Secretary of the DNREC, said that the facility was putting an undue burden on the community due to the uncontrolled odors. “The company has been unable to maintain compliance with DNEC’s Beneficial Use Determination permit," he said.
