May 6: The most recent update to this tracker is Ontario-based Environmental 360 Solutions acquiring Conteneurs CES, a roll-off collection company based in Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Conteneurs serves the Greater Montreal and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu areas with 12-, 20- and 40-cubic-yard containers for C&D and residential customers. In a statement on May 1, E360S CEO Donato Ardellini said the deal would complement his company’s existing operations in the Montreal market.
Other recent deals include a subsidiary of Waste Connections acquiring Washington recycler Pioneer Recycling Services from Delos Capital and The Silverfern Group. Safety-Kleen, a subsidiary of Clean Harbors, also recently acquired Noble Oil Recycling, one of the largest privately held used oil recycling and re-refining companies in the U.S.
The waste and recycling industry's M&A activity has neared historic levels in recent years.
Collective M&A spending by the U.S. solid waste industry's publicly traded companies approached an estimated $4.2 billion in 2023 and $6.3 billion in 2022. This total does not include deals involving companies with private equity or infrastructure fund backing, which have become increasingly active in recent years.
